Alfred de Breanski Snr is regarded as one of England’s most accomplished landscape artists. Born in London, the eldest son of Leopold Breanski, he travelled throughout Wales, the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands.
He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1872, where he exhibited until 1918. His work was also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and the Royal Cambrian Academy.
Breanski also drew much inspiration from the dramatic Scottish countryside, such as the Highlands, which are famed for their desolate beauty and which provide some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain.
For much of his life Breanski lived in Greenwich, Lewisham and Cookham. In 1880 he became a Freeman of the City of London. His many patrons included Sir James Lemon and the Bishop of Peterborough. The work of Breanski is represented in several museums including Southampton Art Gallery and the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne.
