Born in Kohama, Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka, the second son and fifth child of seven born to father Takayoshi and mother Shizu
1942
Enters Osaka Municipal Kohama Elementary School
1945
Is among those evacuated en masse to a temple in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture
1946
Returns home. Around this time, develops an interest in modern art after being shown photos
1949
Enters Osaka Municipal Sumiyoshi Junior High School No. 1
1952
Begins studying drafting at Kogei Senior High School, Osaka, a vocational school of the arts. Belongs to the school's Modern Art Club, and as a third-year student, produces work using rough burlap cloth.
1955
Graduates from Kogei Senior High School, and begins working at Sharp Hayakawa Electrics Co., Ltd. (forerunner of Sharp Corporation).
1956
Goes to work in the public relations department of the Daiei film studio
1957
Around this time, meets Gutai group members Shozo Shimamoto, Yasuo Sumi, and Chiyu Uemae at a modern art exhibition
1959
Meets Jiro Yoshihara for the first time at the 8th Gutai Art Exhibition
1962
Becomes a member of the Gutai Art Association. Designs pamphlet for the performance Don't Worry, the Moon Won't Fall Down.
1966
Establishes M Design Studio, where Kumiko Natsume works as his assistant
1967
Marries Kumiko Natsume
1971
Travels to the US and Europe. Visits Takesada Matsutani in Paris
1972
Death of Jiro Yoshihara and the end of the Gutai Art Association

Builds a studio in Mino'o, Osaka
1974
Begins teaching at Kansai Women's Junior College of Art
1975
Establishes Maekawa Art and Design Laboratory (painting school for children). Son Hide is born. Appointed to the jury of the Ashiya Municipal Exhibition and Dobiten Exhibition

Around this time, makes frequent trips to visit Shinto shrines with former Gutai members Kazuo Shiraga, Yutaka Matsuda, Yasuo Sumi and Sadaharu Horio

Purchases old house in Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture for use as a studio and storage space.

Executes wall painting at Shinsei Lutheran Church, Matsuzaka. Spends a month at the Costa Brava in Spain to produce prints

Executes wall painting in lobby of the Hotel Riviera Shishikui, and installs a work of art in every room of the hotel
