Reception for the artists, Tuesday, 5 July, 6-8 pm

The Baldwin Gallery is proud to present new paintings and drawings in our sixth show by acclaimed contemporary artist Donald Sultan. Known for his brilliant use of color, bold images, abstract patterning and forms, and rich textures, Sultan paints an interesting array of flowers and lanterns for his new show. Working with a variety of media, the artist creates large compositions that dance the line between abstraction and representation.

A native of North Carolina, Sultan holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a BFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After moving to New York in 1975, he quickly established himself as a prominent painter, printmaker and sculptor. Sultan’s works are included in many prestigious collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Australian National Gallery, and the Walker Art Center.

The Baldwin Gallery is also pleased to announce their first show with Brooklyn-based artist Marc Swanson. Swanson uses diverse materials and creates works in varying media including sculpture, drawing, collage, photography, video and installation. Best known for his crystal-covered deer head sculptures and antler pieces, Swanson juxtaposes both ‘high’ and ‘low’ materials in order to explore the physical and spiritual duality inherent in his experience of masculinity. This exhibition runs concurrently with his solo museum show at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Houston.

Raised in New England, Swanson moved to San Francisco in the early 1990s and began creating his pieces as a way to investigate his personal history. Swanson later went on to receive his MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, in 2004, and also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, in Skowhegan, Maine, in 2000. Swanson has held solo exhibitions in many major cities, including San Francisco, Chicago and New York and his work has been included in group exhibitions at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Miami Art Museum and the Saatchi Gallery, London.

The public is invited to a reception for the artists on Tuesday July 5, from 6 to 8 pm.

Since 1994, the Baldwin Gallery has been presenting new work by established and emerging artists.
It has earned an international reputation as an important venue for contemporary art, with a particular focus on American artists.
