The Baldwin Gallery is pleased to present a show of new work by acclaimed contemporary artist Enrique Martínez Celaya. His new paintings, drawings and sculpture engage with personal life experience, memory, and spirituality, which resonate on a universal level. Mysterious figures appear in dreamlike landscapes, and emerge in the form of sculptures which provide a more tangible presence. Primal forces operating in a timeless realm are manifested in his symbolic imagery.
The current work further explores the dialogue between the subconscious and the modern theology of science. Throughout, autobiographical figures continue to pose complicated questions, appearing to lead the viewer through metaphor and gesture. In addition, we will be publishing a show catalogue based on Martinez Celaya’s notebooks that will showcase his visual art, as well as the artist’s poetry and writings about science and philosophy. Martínez Celaya currently lives and works in South Florida, and his art is widely exhibited and collected in the United States, Europe, and Latin America.
The Baldwin Gallery will also be presenting recent paintings by Delia Brown. Though young, Ms. Brown has received considerable press and attention for her work, which often speaks to privilege and power, the attendant supporting roles required to maintain the social-economic balance, and the spaces in between. She frequently uses the identifiable trappings of conspicuous consumption to comment on subtle class distinctions, values and mores of the modern world, often specifically as refers to the rarified climes of contemporary art.
Ms. Brown further explores her “Guerrilla Lounging” series with a body of work set in Aspen. The luxury-heavy mountain town proved a perfect setting for her lavishly rendered paintings of private parties in appropriated spaces. The setting and Ms. Brown’s attentions successfully produce a particularly luscious, if biting, paean of social criticism. The Gallery will also produce a catalogue, Ms. Brown’s first, to commemorate the Aspen works. Though her aesthetic is clearly tinted by the lingering golden light of her native Southern California, Ms. Brown currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception July 6th from 6-8 pm.
Since 1994, the Baldwin Gallery has been presenting new work by established artists of international renown. In that time, the gallery has earned a reputation as an important venue for contemporary art.
Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm, and Sunday from Noon to 5 pm. The Baldwin Gallery is located at 209 South Galena Street in Aspen, Colorado.
