The Baldwin Gallery is pleased to present its second show with the acclaimed artist Philip Taaffe. His recent paintings and drawings are diverse images incorporating cross-cultural influences gleaned from his travels around the globe and time spent living abroad earlier in his life. Taaffe draws connections between history, pattern, design, natural history and contemporary painting in order to harmoniously blend the archaic with the present. This synthesis of information is the basis of his work and fulfills his desire to reveal his deliberations and links to the past while simultaneously drawing these ideas into the future.

Philip Taaffe studied at the Cooper Union where he gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1977. He held his first solo exhibition in New York in 1982 and has since been shown in the Carnegie International, two Sydney Biennials and three Whitney Biennials. In addition, his work is part of the permanent collections of many museums worldwide, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Philidelphia Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Also showing at the Baldwin Gallery for the second time is California-based artist Greg Colson. His pieces include drawings, wall sculptures made from salvaged materials and large pie-charts illustrating the supposedly 'scientific' results of polls on topics as varied as common phobias or reasons for 'de-friending' someone on Facebook. The underlying wit in his pieces pokes fun at the public's need to bring order to chaos and reflects the fragmented nature of the modern world, where the trivial is often afforded the same concern and ubiquity as the truly important or significant.

A California native, Greg Colson earned his M.F.A. from Claremont Graduate School and has had solo exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. His work is also included in many public exhibitions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C., the Panza Collection in Switzerland, Sammlung Rosenkranz in Berlin and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
