Opening reception: Friday, November 23, 6-8 pm
The Baldwin Gallery is pleased to present new work by acclaimed contemporary photographer Sarah Charlesworth.
“Concrete Color”, Sarah Charlesworth’s newest photographic series, continues to advance the complex conversations she has explored throughout her career (most recently in her “A Simple Text” work from 2004). By further minimizing the attendant forms, Charlesworth centers the emphasis ever the more firmly in the intricate purity of the deeply saturated colors. Framed by pure white and neutral photographic grey, and garnished with photographer’s color scales, Charlesworth reveals the interplay in variations of hues and tones familiar to the color theorist. The often overlooked subtle differences invite the viewer to examine the relationships between the different colors and the way that they interact with one another creating surprising and complicated emotions.
Born in 1947, the artist received a B.A. from Barnard College in 1969, and currently resides in New York City. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held in major cities around the world, including: Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Toronto, Berlin, Brussels, London, Edinburgh, Geneva, Paris, Rome, and Florence.
Charlesworth's photographs appear in museum collections throughout the United States and Europe, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; amongst many others.
The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception November 23rd from 6-8 pm.
