Ben Brown Fine Arts is pleased to present J PARK: Embodiment 2017, our first solo exhibition of artist J. Park at the Hong Kong gallery. J. Park is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work includes painting, sculpture, photography, video and installations. This exhibition presents a group of recent paintings as well as two video installations.

J. Park addresses many social and political themes in his work, including surveillance, communication and social order, all through the framework of omnipresent technology. J. Park’s paintings are comprised of elaborate arrangements of dots and bars evoking complex computer coding, microchips, braille, barcodes and myriad other technological associations.

These seemingly coded paintings are actually manipulations of enlarged pixels presented in arbitrary arrangements, resulting in works that are at once rhythmic and meditative, handmade and mechanical, minimalist and abstract, orderly and random. In creating these works J. Park digitally manipulates pixels on a computer, prints out 2.4 meter wide adhesive sheets with this “coded” patterning, attaches the adhesive sheet to a canvas, and after removing the lines and dots from the sheet, fills in the negative spaces with acrylic.

Born in Daegu, South Korea, in 1966, J. Park holds a bachelor’s degree in painting from Keimyung University, Daegu, and studied at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. J. Park has had solo exhibitions at Cian Art Museum, Yeongcheon; Bongsan Cultural Center, Daegu; Gwangju Museum of Art; Fukuoka Museum of Modern Art and Le Centre culturel du Crous de Paris. His work is in many prominent private and public collections, including National Museum of Contemporary Art, Gwacheon; Seoul Metropolitan Museum of Art; Daegu Art Museum; Cian Art Museum, Yeongcheon; Gwangju Museum of Art; Samsung Group and L’Ecole National Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. The artist lives and works in Daegu.

The artist will be at the opening and is available for interviews.
