Moved to Chicago to attend the Art Institute while working in silversmith shop

Made several trips to Europe and atttended the Academie Julian in Paris, France

Founded Stone City Art Colony near Anamosa, IA

Appointed dirctor of the Public Works of Art Projects

Worked at University of Iowa and became spokesman for the concept of Regionalism. He is known along with Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry, as the third in the Regionalist triad. His work is recognized as shaping America's vision of the Midwest
