The first solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle in Basel in 1980 entitled Invasion durch eine falsche Sprache, marks a turning point in his artist's career. The same year he participated at the Venice Biennale gaining international popularity. In 1982 he was invited to Documenta 7 in Kassel and in 1984 in a group exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Martin Disler, autodidact driven by an incessant and frenetic creativity has investigated issues such as life and death, frequently represented in an almost obsessive manner. His works of matrix gestural, sometimes impulsive, characterize his entire work. He has lived in New York, Amsterdam, Milan, Zurich, Lugano and Les Planchettes (JU). Disappeared unfortunately at the age of 47, he leaves behind him a rich artistic production including: sculptures, paintings, drawings, graphics, poems and writings, preserved today in his archive in Basel.

Parallel to his work as an artist, Disler also produced profound and powerful literary works, including the novel Bilder vom Maler (Pictures of a Painter), and contributed with his texts to more than a dozen artist's books. In 2020/2021 a large monographic exhibition (with catalog) was held at the Kirchner Museum Davos entitled Theater des Überlebens. Martin Disler - Die späten Jahre dedicated to his last ten years of work, linking his artistic production with the works of Kirchner.

In 2021 two important institutions purchased his works: the Städel Museum in Frankfurt and the Bündner Kunstmuseum in Chur.
