CLAIRE COREY „RENDERINGS“

In “Renderings”, her second solo showing at Galerie Bugdahn und Kaimer, Claire Corey continues her exploration of the border region between the computer and painting.
For some years now, the artist has been applying the computer as a tool for her paintings. Developed entirely with digital software and hardware, the works are then transferred onto canvas in a labour-intensive process involving special pigmented inks, and then mounted on stretcher frames.
Recently, Corey has been processing the digital paintings manually, and in selectively applying varnish and/or pearlescent paint to the canvas, the distinctions between digital and traditional painting become more ambivalent than ever.
In formal terms the element of composition in the oeuvre is opening up and continues to offer the viewer manifold entrées to the works while the overall pictorial effect manifests as increasingly radical. Apart from the panel paintings, Corey is also premiering her Moving Painting. This video work renders six pieces in the exhibition anew as three-dimensional pieces and gives the viewer the illusion of entering the painting space. This further enhances the existing spatial quality of the flat works and affords access to the construction of each painting.

Claire Corey (*1968) studied art at the University of California in Los Angeles and, in 2001, received the Aldrich Museum Trustee’s Award for an Emerging Artist. She lives and works in New York.
