ClampArt is pleased to announce the opening of “Doris Mitsch: New Work,” the artist’s first solo show at the gallery.
The exhibition includes fourteen artworks from the artist’s two series, Datura and Darkness. In both bodies of work, Mitsch moodily captures in astonishing detail the intricacies of a variety of natural forms. From lush flowers and spiraled shells to the strange skeleton of a sea urchin floating in mysterious black space, each of Mitsch’s images enthralls. Pictured from unusual vantage points and often printed in startlingly large scale, the artist demands her audience contemplate organic objects anew.
Mitsch states, “I have a lot of questions about beauty. I find almost all natural shapes beautiful, and most people agree that flowers, especially, are beautiful . . . but why? I’m interested in what happens when you isolate familiar things and look at them with unfamiliar closeness and clarity, or from unfamiliar perspectives.” Rather than drawing upon photography’s typical relation to objectivity, Mitsch transforms and challenges how we currently define the medium. Mitsch is a pioneer in new photographic media, constructing images without the use of a traditional camera. Employing a flatbed scanner to capture her subjects, the artist then prints directly from digital files onto thick rag paper. The inky, matte, slightly textured surface of the final artworks lends them a distinctive look more akin to pastels or watercolors than standard photographic prints.
