ClampArt is pleased to present an exhibition of work by photographer, Joshua Lutz, on the occasion of the publication of the artist’s monograph, “Meadowlands” (powerHouse, 2008).

Joshua Lutz began photographing the Meadowlands ten years ago as a documentary study of the 32-square-miles of marshy wilderness that sits between New Jersey and New York. Over the years, however, this project has evolved into a compelling artistic exploration, revealing the soul of this liminal space. Robert Sullivan, in the introduction to Lutz’s book, describes the Meadowlands as “[…] that giant swath of swamp and space that separates New Jersey from New York City, or, put another way, from New York City and the rest of the United States of America.” But Lutz’s photographs are not only representations of the landscape of the Meadowlands; they are also portraits of the individuals who inhabit the area. Lutz’s photographs explore the distinct personalities of the “Meadowlanders,” while also considering the people’s relationships to their environs.

Joshua Lutz graduated with an MFA in photography from Bard College/The International Center for Photography in 2005. He has received several prestigious awards and grants, including being named one of the top thirty emerging photographers by Photo District News Magazine in 2004. Lutz has exhibited his work in numerous group shows and solo exhibitions over the past fifteen years.
