L.S. Lowry RA, a 70th Anniversary Exhibition at Crane Kalman Gallery in London runs from 21
October to 10 December 2022.
This varied retrospective showcases 42 works, including 25 paintings, as well as
a selection of drawings, inviting audiences to trace the continuing journey of one of
the most pre-eminent artists of 20th Century Britain and his relationship with the gallery
over a seventy-year period.
Viewers can expect to see Lowry’s renowned industrial landscapes, placed alongside his
timeless and beautiful seascapes and surreal, lesser-known drawings. Many of the works
have not been seen in public for many decades.
‘The range of works in this exhibition show L.S. Lowry is such a far more interesting, varied,
inventive and experimental artist than is the stereotype’ notes Andrew Kalman. ‘It is an
exhibition wrapped in the history of the gallery and L.S. Lowry, celebrating the gallery’s long
commitment to the artist throughout 70 years.’
The exhibition pays tribute to Carol Ann Lowry (1944-2020), a dear and benevolent friend to
Crane Kalman Gallery. Always supportive and keen to lend to our exhibitions and helping
with projects including the documentary Looking for Lowry featuring Sir Ian McKellen and in
2014, the artist’s first ever show overseas, in Nanjing, China.
To accompany the exhibition, Crane Kalman have published a fully illustrated hard back
catalogue with an introduction by the writer Howard Jacobson.
The show – a predominately loan exhibition – is open from Monday to Friday, 10am-6pm,
until 10 December 2022, at Crane Kalman Gallery, 178, Brompton Road,
London, SW3 1HQ, UK. The exhibition catalogue is available priced £30 via the gallery.
