Timeline

1939: Born in Memphis, TN
1967: Went to New York and met Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, and Diane Arbus
: Presented his work to John Szarkowski at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY
1974: Recieved a Guggenheim Fellowship
: Appointed Lecturer in Visiual and Environmental Studies at The Carpenter Center, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA
1975: Recieved a National Endowment for the Arts Photographer's Fellowship
1978: Appointed Reasearcher in Color Videa at Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the invitation of Richard Leacock
1989: Accepted one of 54 Master Photographers of 1960–1979 awards from Photographic Society of Japan
1996: Recieved the University of Memphis Distinguished Achievement Award
2003: Accepted Gold medal for Photography from National Arts Club, New York, NY
2004: Received the Getty Images Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Center of Photography Infinity Awards
