HENRY FARRER (1843-1903) was a founder of the American Watercolor Society and of the New York Etching Club; he exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Art Association, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
Born in London, FARRER was the younger brother of the pre-Raphaelite artist Thomas Charles Farrer, with whom he presumably studied. He emigrated to America in 1862; in New York he had a studio at the famous Tenth Street building, where such artists as Winslow Homer, JG Brown, John La Farge, William Merritt Chase, and Albert Bierstadt also worked.
Early in his career, HENRY FARRER was associated with the pre-Raphaelite movement. However, by the early 1870s, he had adopted the Tonalist style, and it is for his Tonalist paintings and for his watercolors and etchings, mostly seascapes and landscapes of the New York area, for which he is best known.
This exhibition is composed of 20 drawings that have never before been exhibited; they are all from a private collection. They include Long Island and Staten Island landscapes and harbor scenes.
