Masterworks 2010: James Turrell, Olafur Eliasson, Spencer Finch
May 4 – July 2, 2010
Opening May 4th, Dickinson is delighted to present an exhibition of James Turrell, Olafur Eliasson, and Spencer Finch. Dickinson will show a body of work which will confront the perception, memory and deceptiveness of light and darkness.
Los Angeles born James Turrell has been concerned with the relationship between space and light for the past 50 years. Many of his installations form a subtle trompe-l'œil in which he manipulates light within a controlled space in order to create the appearance of a canvas or a tangible object, when in reality, the viewer is simply seeing a projected light. Gard Red from 1968 will be on view.
Olafur Eliasson may be best known for his large scale projects including the installation of artificial waterfalls along the East River in New York, during the summer of 2008. His 2003 Weather Project resulted in a recreation of sunlight in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern, London. Dickinson will be installing Your repetitive view, a work from 2000 which distorts and condenses the light and sound of the outside world and transfers it into the gallery, in the form of a giant kaleidoscope.
Spencer Finch works with a multitude of mediums ranging from watercolor and photography, to video and artificial light installations. Most recently his work has been commissioned for the Highline Park in New York, following his major mid-career survey in 2008 at MASS MoCA. Mainly concerned with memory and perception, Finch has made installations which aim to recall a specific light from an exact time and place. The works at Dickinson will include three lightboxes testing the color of remembered darknesses and three watercolors documenting the darkness of the famous caves at Lascaux.
