Alain Clément - La Joie de la Couleur

Alain Clément - La Joie de la Couleur

“With every painting I tackle, I hope that a specific, a special, color will manifest itself. Everything is aimed at the emergence of this color, but often it squirms away, once again disappearing into the dark.”

The oeuvre of Alain Clément (b. 1941) is noticeably influenced by the interplay of the rich spectrum of colors cast across the walls of his atelier by the intensive sunlight found on clear days in the Southern French town of Nîmes. Clément captures this colorful spectacle in his paintings, works on paper, and sculptures. As a painter, he evolved from the figurative to the nonrepresentational, but as of recent the denotative, the nude, has once again begun to resonate within his painting. His current works, from 2016 to 2018, are distinguished by a fascinating evolution: swinging curves and arches erupt and splinter, penetrating the angles and edges of the background while simultaneously reemerging elsewhere. It is the inauguration of a new, dynamic phase in which the fields of color stratify, interweave and entwine. The current paintings of the 77-year-old artist exert a sense of youth and invigoration, and stimulate notable anticipatory interest in the future progression of the artist's formal language.

In 2015, DIE GALERIE hosted their first exhibition dedicated to Alain Clément. Now we are pleased to present our second comprehensive presentation of his artwork, consisting of more than 50 pieces from 1995 to 2018. Clément is an artist who has long enjoyed a solid, major reputation in the international art world, particularly in France, Korea and Germany. His works are found in prestigious institutions like the Centre Pompidou, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, and the Kunsthalle Bremen.
