Guided by the great masters of Modernism and Surrealism with Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, André Masson, Joan Miró, Wifredo Lam, and Salvador Dalí,  this summer DIE GALERIE dives into the world of fantastic creatures.  Through their exploration of mythology, psychoanalysis, and the subconscious, the Surrealists depicted animal figures in their works in an entirely unique way. The group exhibition Fantastic Creatures builds a bridge from seminal Surrealism up to the present day with contemporary artists of DIE GALERIE.

We explore the imaginary universe and dream worlds of Spanish painter José Enguídanos,  in which a wide variety of animals and creatures emerge and immediately disappear into the surreal. The surreal and the mystical can also be found in the oeuvre of the artist Amy Ernst, Max  Ernst's granddaughter, who in her art combines deconstructed motifs and patterns from monotypes and etchings covered with drawings and collages.  While Johannes Heisig consciously shines into the unconscious of dream worlds, Torsten Holtz intertwines reality with his fantastic imagination to create a form of magical realism. In Klaus Zylla‘s work, bizarre, surreal mixed creatures with zoomorphic features cavort as representations of mental states and dream figures. In the funny,  dreamy works of the Alsatian Raymond E. Waydelich –  from the surrealist-inspired shadow boxes to the fantastic bronzes and  marvelous graphics – there are surprising worlds to be discovered.
