The sports motif offers a rare opportunity to explore the presence of the figure in contemporary painting. Aside from providing an opportunity to represent the physical aspects of the body, sports also enable us to see the choreographed composition of bodies in motion. All of these associations, however, go beyond mere academic interests. The subject matter is rife with history, symbolism and mythology, and a correlation with representational art from other era is obvious. Add elements of contemporary life, such as the media and corporate marketing, and one may wonder why this subject matter isn’t more prevalent in the first place! All of this, however, may pale in the presence of a true Saints fan. The unbiased opinion of a true fan may provide the litmus test for veracity in this endeavor, and an instance where the collective consciousness of a subject truly matters when looking at painting.
