Timeline
Having completed war service as a radio operator in the Royal Navy, Malcolm Hughes went to Manchester Regional College of Art and then continued his studies at the Royal College of Art in London. Gradually, he developed his own constructive style which was displayed in his first solo show at the I.C.A. in London in 1965. Like most of his contemporaries, Hughes held several teaching posts working in the School of Architecture at the Polytechnic of Central London, Bath Academy of Art and Chelsea School of Art where he taught with John Ernest and Anthony Hill. After founding the Systems Group with Jeffrey Steele in 1969 he went on to organise the Arts Council's Systems exhibition (1972-73) whilst also running the Graduate School at the Slade (1973-83). In 1984 he also became a founding member of the group, Exhibiting Space.
