Etherton Gallery celebrates the 100th anniversary of Grand Canyon National Park with an exhibition of stunning contemporary images by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer and environmental activist, Jack Dykinga, and 19th century and vintage photographs by William H. Bell, Ansel Adams, Mark Klett, and others, that capture the awe inspiring grandeur of one of the great wonders of the world. Rekindle your passion for the Grand Canyon in Tucson this summer!  An opening reception and book signing will be held at 7-10pm, Saturday, June 22. Jack Dykinga will sign copies of his recently released book, Grand Canyon: A Photographer’s Favorite Viewpoints (Arizona Highways, 2018). Jack Dykinga: The Grand Canyon National Park (1919-2019) runs through Sept. 7, 2019.

Owner Terry Etherton said that, ‘I am especially pleased to help commemorate this important milestone and help bring attention to the Grand Canyon National Park’s “unique natural, cultural and historic resources,” with the photographs of Jack Dykinga. Jack Dykinga has built a career on using photography to advocate for the protection and conservation of wild spaces all over the world. 

In 2019, the Grand Canyon celebrates 100 years since its designation as a national park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Grand Canyon welcomes approximately six million visitors each year. Artist Bios

Jack Dykinga

Jack Dykinga blends fine art photography and documentary photojournalism. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1971 for Feature Photography, and is a regular contributor to Arizona Highways and National Geographic magazines. He has published nine wilderness advocacy books, including Frog Mountain Blues, The Sonoran Desert, Stone Canyons of the Colorado Plateau, and Desert: The Mojave and Death Valley. He also authored and photographed Large Format Nature Photography, a guide to color landscape photography. Recent publications include A Photographer’s Life (2017) and The Grand Canyon: A Photographer’s Favorite Viewpoints (2018).  Dykinga has donated his talents to the International League of Conservation Photographer’s RAVEs (Rapid Assessment Visual Expeditions) and participated in expeditions to El Triunfo, Mexico, 2007; Balandra 2007, Baja Sur, Mexico; the Yucatan 2009, Yucatan, Mexico; the U.S./ Mexico Borderlands 2009, and Patagonia, Chile in 2010, among others. RAVE and the September 2010 Great Bear RAVE in B.C. Canada, among others.  On these missions, teams of celebrated photographers from all over the world pool their collective talents to highlight potential environmental degradation.  Jack Dykinga’s photographs have been exhibited at the Center for Creative Photography, and the Museum of Northern Arizona. They were also featured with the work of Ansel Adams in an Arizona Highways retrospective at the Phoenix Art Museum. In April 2010, the International League of Conservation Photographers selected Dykinga’s image, Stone Canyon, as one of the forty best Nature Photographs of all time. In 2011 he received the Outstanding Photographer of the Year Award from the Nature Photographers of North America. Jack Dykinga was recently named by Outdoor Photography magazine as one of the 40 most influential nature photographers. In 2017 he was the recipient of the North American Nature Photographers Association's prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Jack Dykinga and his wife, Margaret live in Tucson, Arizona.

Etherton Gallery

Established in 1981, Etherton Gallery is best known for its expertise in post-World War II American photography. In over 300 exhibitions featuring well over 100 artists, the gallery has showcased the icons of the history of photography as well as the contemporary artists changing its course. Etherton Gallery is dedicated to making great works of photography accessible to novices and experienced collectors alike. The gallery is a long-standing member of AIPAD (the Association of International Photography Art Dealers), and Terry Etherton serves on the Board of Directors.  Etherton Gallery participates in fine art photography fairs including the AIPAD Photography Show NY, Classic Photographs LA, Photo LA, and Paris Photo. The gallery has placed work in numerous private and public collections among them: The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Terry Etherton is an accredited member of the American Society of Appraisers and is available for appraisals, absentee bidding and collections consultation.
