Etherton Gallery presents a selection of iconic photographs by internationally renowned photographer, Steve McCurry in Steve McCurry: Its Own Place and Feeling, opening on February 8th, with a reception Saturday, February 12th, 7:00pm - 10:00pm. Its Own Place and Feeling runs through April 2nd.
Steve McCurry has built a career photographing people and landscapes that speak to him in a very deep, profound way. His photographs get under the skin of a place. While constantly on the road, he is a slow traveler, for whom the journey is more important than the destination. He slows down to observe each place he visits, whether a small rural village, or large bustling city, which allows him to capture the unique character of a place and reveal what moves him.
Often McCurry waits for a picture, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of his surroundings until his intuition tells him that something is about to happen, as with Dust Storm, Rajasthan, India, 1983. On a car trip, McCurry saw the dust storm, pulled over and got out of the car. He waited until the women came into view and made a photograph. Dust Storm is a lyrical image that depicts a group of women in bright red saris ringed around a tree, taking shelter from a dust storm. In Boy in Mid-Flight, Jodhpur, India, 2007, McCurry was quietly walking the street until something caught his eye, a young boy running into a brightly painted alley.
McCurry’s portraits tell powerful stories. Sometimes a face catches his attention, something about them tells a story, resonates with him personally, and he wants to remember, record and share it. Even in the context of a larger story, he makes images that stand on their own, like Afghan Girl (Sharbat Gula), Peshawar, Pakistan, 1984, which portrays a 12-year old girl whose piercing green eyes shyly address McCurry’s camera. Made while McCurry was visiting a refugee camp in Pakistan, this image came to represent the plight of displaced persons everywhere. Despite its particularity, Afghan Girl is now one of the most recognizable images in the world.
For over four decades, Steve McCurry has created photographs that capture the singular character of the people and places he encounters in his travels, expanding our world view, and hopefully, making us better global citizens.
