Spotlight on Art Brut

Enjoy our top picks of Art Brut artworks from the artnet Gallery Network. Discover a diverse selection of Art Brut, Outsider Art, and Naive Artworks.

Outsider Art originated from the discovery that psychiatric patients were creating dramatic works of art unlike anything else in contemporary culture. Initially termed Art Brut (Raw Art) in 1947 by French artist and curator Jean Dubuffet, over the years, Outsider artists have achieved success and critical validation within the elite art world, as they continue to oppose the conventions of traditional and popular art. The trait that unifies this catery of artists, which is no longer limited to psychiatric patients, but has come to encompass a divergent and self-taught group, is a raw quality untouched by current trends or preordained classifications. The works color an elaborate fantasy world, one that redefines and challenges the limits of what we label as art.
