Outsider Art originated from the discovery that psychiatric patients were creating dramatic works of art unlike anything else in contemporary culture. Initially termed Art Brut (Raw Art) in 1947 by French artist and curator Jean Dubuffet, over the years, Outsider artists have achieved success and critical validation within the elite art world, as they continue to oppose the conventions of traditional and popular art.
