Biography

Timeline

A native of Iowa, Robert Bauer was born in 1942 and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His inclusion in the Academy’s 1967 Annual Exhibition of Paintings and Sculpture led to his selection as one of Four Young Realists exhibited by the Kenmore Gallery in Philadelphia. In 1969, Mr. Bauer was featured in the 33rd Mid-Year Annual at the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH. After several more touring group exhibitions, Robert Bauer’s work attracted the attention of New York dealer and collector Allan Stone, who exhibited it in 1980.

Robert Bauer’s work was selected for inclusion in the Janss Collection of American Realism, and was exhibited in that collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1985. Robert Bauer settled in the Boston, Massachusetts area and began to exhibit in Boston at the Thomas Segal Gallery in 1986. His work was first exhibited by Forum Gallery in a group landscape exhibition in 1990.

Since beginning to show with Forum Gallery, Robert Bauer’s work has been chosen for inclusion in exhibitions at Pratt Institute’s Manhattan Gallery, in the 1996-1997 Best of the Season exhibition at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, CT and in the Invitational Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture in 1997 at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York. Robert Bauer is the recipient of painting fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and others, and his paintings are included in the collections of museums and corporations from Mexico City to Minneapolis.
