The work of masterful Cuban artist Julio Larraz wil be on display for the first time in Medellin, in an exhibition framed by his painting’s splendid encounter with color and his fascinating characters, full of stories, solitudes, love and hate, power, and lust.
Larraz’s striking works, like romantic, nostalgic, luxurious, political vignettes of sophisticated women, of a bygone bourgeois world, possibly of the Cuba before the Revolution, men of power, Afrodescendant slaves... will make of this an exhibition that reveals a complete range of the themes painted by this artist during his brilliant career, where the viewer will be left in wonderment at Larraz’s precise and detailed technique, his subtle touch on the canvas, his imagination, which on occasion takes us to the world of dreams.
The exhibition, titled Julio Larraz – Obras Recientes, will feature a selection of 24 works, from oils on canvas to drawings, in a variety of formats, and will be accompanied by beautiful catalog with texts by renowned curator and art critic Eduardo Serrano Rueda.
The show is organized in collaboration by Duque Arango Gallery, where the exhibition will be held in Medellin, and by Art of the World Gallery of Houston, Texas, which represents Julio Arraz.
This will be a large-scale exhibition and a good opportunity for the city to encounter joyful and vibrant paintings that are filled with light and sensuality, a dramatic body of work with a special combination of fantasy and reality, and one of our era’s best colorists (and the best in the handling of the white colors).
