Galería Elvira González is pleased to announce its third solo exhibition by Olafur Eliasson on February 13th, 2018. The exhibition will bring together recent work in which the Icelandic-Danish artist explores the human perception of temporality and movement through the spatial interaction between the viewer and the artworks.
Eliasson talks about his work as experimental set-ups, ranging from photography, sculpture, drawing and video, to major art commissions in public spaces and buildings. His most recent collaboration was with Norman Foster and Foster & Partner Architects for an interior within Bloomberg’s new European headquarters in London.
Spanning his artistic career, from the early 90s and onwards, the artist has made environmental issues and social awareness central to his creative output. Consequently, in 2012, Eliasson launched Little Sun in collaboration with solar engineer Frederik Ottesen, a social project with the mission of bringing sustainable and clean energy to regions without electricity in sub-Saharan Africa.
Olafur Eliasson (Copenhagen, 1967) studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen from 1989 to 1995. Currently, he lives and works out of Copenhagen and Berlin. The latter is where, in 1995, the artist founded Studio Olafur Eliasson – a creative hub housing a team of over a hundred technicians and craftsmen as well as architects, art historians, web and graphic designers, film-makers, cooks and administrators. Other related projects include the Institüt für Raumexperimente, an innovative model for arts education founded as a part of his professorship with the Universität der Künste Berlin in 2009, as well as Studio Other Spaces, founded in 2014 with architect Sebastian Behmann to focus on projects of a more experimental and multidisciplinary nature.
Eliasson represented Denmark at the Venice Biennale 2003 and has exhibited his work before and since in numerous international museums, among others the Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paolo, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA), the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and PS1 Contemporary Art Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney, the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris and the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, The Leeum Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, South Korea, and the Long Museum in Shanghai, China, and many more.
His work is included in many public and private collections such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles, the Tate Modern in London, Museum Reina Sofia in Madrid and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
