Born: "Juan Rodríguez Montoya" the son of veterans of the Mexican revolution in Guadalajara, Mexico
1935
moved to Mexico City, Mexico, became friends with Mexican writer Octavio Paz
1950 - 1959
traveled throughout Italy and Greece
1957
awarded the José Clemente Orozco prize by the government of Jalisco
1960
Returned to Mexico to live and work.
1970
traveled to Rome
1975
settled in Paris, formed friendships with Spanish artist Antonio Saura, Czech novelist Milan Kundera and Argentinian writer Julio Cortazar.
1987
awarded the National Art Prize by the Mexican government

awarded the French Legion of Honour

King Juan Carlos of Spain presented him with Spain's Velázquez Plastic Arts Prize
