Die 1944 in Prag geborene Künstlerin Katharina Sieverding hat mit ihrem Werk wesentlich zur Erweiterung des
Kunstbegriffs und der interdisziplinären medialen Kunstpraxis beigetragen und ist durch die beispiellose
Konsequenz, mit der sie ihr filmisch wie fotografisch extrem großflächiges und auf differenzierte Weise
konstruiertes Porträt seit den 1960er Jahren in Bezug auf repräsentationspolitische Fragestellungen zu Gender
und Postkolonialismus einsetzt, international bekannt geworden. Darüber hinaus war ihre Arbeit immer wieder
Auslöser für Debatten über die gesellschaftliche, politische, soziale und kulturelle Gegenwart, wie
beispielsweise die Plakat-Aktionen "Deutschland wird Deutscher" 1993 und "Die Pleite" 2005 im Großraum
Berlin. Katharina Sieverding ist überzeugt, dass politisches Engagement eine wesentliche Verantwortung
zeitgenössischer künstlerischer Praxis ist und dass künstlerische Praxis die Aufgabe hat, vielschichtige
Positionen zu entwickeln, die die beschleunigten Prozesse der Gegenwart nicht nur abbilden, sondern auch
kritisch hinterfragen.
Die GALERIE CHRISTIAN LETHERT wird unter dem Titel ENCODE V 2006 neue fotografische Arbeiten
von Katharina Sieverding zeigen. Die Ausstellung, welche parallel zur Kölner Kunstmesse eröffnet wird, zeigt
15 großformatige Arbeiten, davon 13 im Format 125 x 190 bzw. 190 x 125 und Encode 14/15 in der Größe von
275 x 375 cm. Das den neuen Bildkonstruktionen zugrunde liegende Material ist aus dem umfangreichen
Reservoir fotografischer/dokumentarischer Protokolle, Blicke, Analysen, die in den Jahren 2004-2006 mit immer
derselben Kamera und Filmmaterial fotografiert wurden. ENCODE V 2006 ist eine kritisch/kontextuelle
Technik, um zentrale kulturelle Fragen visuell artikulieren zu können. Jedes Bild konstruiert einen Raum, einen
Ort zum Nachdenken über Repräsentation und Interpretation, Faktum und Fiktion, Maskierung und
Demaskierung im System Kunst/Kultur und fotografischer Kunstproduktion.

Born in Prague in 1944, Katharina Sieverding has made a major contribution to opening up the concept of art
and to interdisciplinary medial practice. Since the 1960s she has been working both in film and photography,
using extremely large formats to construct, deconstruct and reconstruct her own portrait, gaining international
acclaim by asking challenging questions of the politics of representation, gender and postcolonialism. Her work
has frequently triggered debates on contemporary society, politics, social and cultural issues, one example being
her poster installations “Deutschland wird Deutscher” 1993 and “Die Pleite” 2005 in Greater Berlin. Katharina
Sieverding firmly believes that a responsible contemporary artistic practice must be politically committed, and
that artistic practice has the task to develop complex positions that not only represent the accelerated processes
of the present, but also critically reflect upon them.
GALERIE CHRISTIAN LETHERT will show recent photographs by Katharina Sieverding under the title
ENCODE V 2006. The exhibition consists of 15 large-sized photographs, thereof 13 with the dimensions of 125 x
190 cm or 190 x 125 cm and Encode 14/15 with the dimensions of 275 x 375 cm. The source material for the
new pictorial constructions derives from a rich pool of photographic documentaries glimpses and
examinations. It has been taken during the years 2004-2006, consistently using the same camera and
films. ENCODE V 2006 is a critical, context-based technique addressing major cultural issues in a
visual way. Each picture creates space and place for thoughts about representation/interpretation,
fact/fiction, masking/demasking, in the art world, culture and production of photographic art.
