Die Galerie Christian Lethert freut sich, die erste Einzelausstellung mit dem amerikanischen Künstler Richard Tuttle zu präsentieren. Seit den Anfängen 1965 entzieht sich dessen künstlerisches Schaffen einer kategorischen Einordnung und zeugt von Tuttles ungebrochener Neugier, die ihn bis heute zu einem der originellsten und einflussreichsten Künstler der Gegenwart macht. Diese Aufgeschlossenheit und Sensibilität spiegelt sich auch in der Ausstellung BOOKS, MULTIPLES, PRINTS, WRITINGS AND NEW PROJECTS wider. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Künstler und in Einklang mit den räumlichen Gegebenheiten wurden Arbeiten ausgewählt und eine eigene Ausstellungsarchitektur entworfen, die eindrücklich den spezifisch offenen und wandelbaren Charakter von Tuttles Œuvre aufzeigen.

Die ausgestellten Grafiken der letzten Jahre zeugen von einem erfindungs- und findungsreichen Arbeitsprozess. Hervorzuheben ist hier die in Zusammenarbeit mit The Song Cave, New York gerade herausgegebene Edition ´negativities, 2017, eine leichte, türkisgrüne Zeichnung, die von einem handschriftlich verfassten Text überlagert wird. Tuttles erster digitaler Druck stellt nicht nur bezüglich der Herstellung ein Novum dar, sondern ermöglichte es dem Künstler erstmals Text und Bild zu vereinen und somit eine Symbiose zwischen seinen handgefertigten Büchern und der Druckgrafik zu schaffen.

Dass Tuttle mit jedem Projekt neue Möglichkeiten erforscht und stets einen hohen Anspruch an Form, Farbe, Material und Druck hegt, zeigen auch die im zweiten Raum ausgestellten Multiples, Künstlerbücher und Kataloge sowie Bücher, deren Einband er gestaltet hat. Darunter befindet sich auch eine Sammlung von Kurzgedichten, die zwischen Juni und Oktober 2008 entstanden sind und jetzt unter dem Titel Rest, 2017 neu herausgegeben werden. Wie kleine skulpturale Gebilde verlaufen die fragmentarischen Texte über die Seiten und entsprechen dem intuitiven und fragilen Charakter von Tuttles Werk.

Die Auswahl und Form der Präsentation möchte die Verwandlungsprozesse der Werkformen und die Vernetzungen im facettenreichen aber höchst konsistenten Werk Tuttles aufzeigen und beleuchten.

Gerne möchten wir Sie darauf hinweisen, dass die Buchhandlung Walther König während der Ausstellungslaufzeit ein Richard Tuttle - Sonderfenster eingerichtet hat. Richard Tuttle, 1941 in Rahawy, New Jersey, USA geboren, lebt in New York, New Mexico und Maine. Sein Studium am Trinity College, Hartford, schloss er 1963 ab und eröffnete 1965 seine erste Einzelausstellung in der Betty Parson Gallery in New York. Seine Werke werden seitdem weltweit in zahlreichen Museen und Galerien präsentiert, auch auf der documenta und der Biennale von Venedig war er mehrfach vertreten. Die Ausstellung Richard Tuttle, James Ensor’s ‚real‘ color ist vom 01.06. bis 05.11.2017 im Mu.ZEE, Kunstmuseum aan zee, Ostende zu sehen.

Mit Ende dieser besonderen Kollaboration, für die wir Erhard Klein danken, verabschiedet sich die Galerie Christian Lethert aus den derzeitigen Räumen im Belgischen Viertel. Im Oktober wird die Eröffnung der neuen Galerieräume, nur wenige Gehminuten entfernt, mit einer Gruppenausstellung gefeiert.

Galerie Christian Lethert is delighted to present the first solo exhibition featuring the American artist Richard Tuttle. Since the beginnings in 1965, his artistic work eludes categorical classification thus testifying Tuttle’s unabated curiosity which has made him one of the most original and influential contemporary artists to date.

This open-mindedness and sensibility is also reflected in the exhibition BOOKS, MULTIPLES, PRINTS, WRITINGS AND NEW PROJECTS. In close collaboration with the artist and in harmony with the spatial conditions, works were chosen and an exhibition architecture was designed that convincingly highlight the specifically open and variable character of Tuttle’s œuvre. The graphic art of recent years, demonstrates an ingenious and inventive working process. Note the collaboration with The Song Cave, New York, and their freshly published (2017) edition ´negativities, a light turquoise drawing that is superimposed by a handwritten text. Tuttle’s first digital print was not only unprecedented with regards to its making but also enabled the artist to combine text and image for the first time, thus creating a symbiosis between his hand-made books and printed graphics. The fact that Tuttle explores new possibilities with each project, always making high demands on form, colour, material, and print, is also evident in the multiples, artist’s books, and catalogues as well as books, of which he designed the covers, shown in the second room. Among these works there is also a collection of short poems that were written between June and October 2008 and that are now re-edited in 2017 under the title Rest. The fragmented texts spread across the pages like small sculptural formations and correspond to the intuitive and fragile character of Tuttle’s work.

The choice and form of presentation aims to demonstrate and highlight the transformation process of the forms of works as well as the inspiring connectivity within the multifaceted but highly consistent work by Tuttle.

Richard Tuttle, born 1941 in Rahawy, New Jersey, USA, lives in New York, New Mexico and Maine. He received a BA from Trinity College, Hartford and held his first solo show in New York at Betty Parsons Gallery in 1965. Tuttle has exhibited worldwide, and was included in the Venice Biennale and documenta, three times each. The exhibition Richard Tuttle, James Ensor’s ‚real‘ color im Mu.ZEE, Kunstmuseum aan zee, Ostend, Belgium will run from 1 July until 5 November.

At the end of this special collaboration, for which we would like to thank Erhard Klein, the Galerie Christian Lethert will be leaving the present location in the ‘Belgische Viertel’. In October, we will celebrate the inauguration of our new gallery space, only walking distance away, with a group exhibition.
