Galerie Ascan Crone was founded 1982 in Hamburg by Ascan Crone and Mechthild von Dannenberg. In 1998, their long-time business partner, Andreas Osarek, took over the gallery and changed the name into Galerie Crone.
From the beginning, the gallery program focussed on international Contemporary Art. Since Andreas Osarek took charge of the program, the acquisition of young artists reshaped the gallery's profile. Again, the gallery has become an important contributor to the present-day artistic discourse.
From October 2001 on, Galerie Crone operated both in Hamburg and Berlin, where it is now located in Rudi-Dutschke-Str. 26—in close vicinity to other internationally reknowned galleries, and to the famous Friedrichstraße. What started out as the Berlin branch of Galerie Crone, has now become its main office and exhibition space.
In 2004, the Hamburg location was closed. At the same time, the gallery doubled its exhibition space in Berlin. In 2010, Galerie Crone extended its space by moving to the first floor and keeping the former back room on the ground floor. Both floors serve to display the established artists of the gallery, as well as younger artists. With the separation of the rooms, two different exhibitions can take place at the same time, as well as a comprehensive exhibition expanded on two floors.
