Alexander Rodchenko 'An Important Collection of Vintage Photographs'

Saturday, November 24, 2001–Friday, November 30, 2001

On 24 November 2001, Galerie Gmurzynska Zug will open an exhibition, showing an important collection of vintage photographs by the Russian artist Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956).

The exhibition offers a survey of the whole range of Alexander Rodchenko's photographic production. Apart from a representative choice of works dating from the entire period of Rodchenko's preoccupation with photography, the show also features highlights like the Girl with Leica, the Trumpeter or the series of portraits of Rodchenko's friend Vladimir Mayakovski, which have become milestones of modern photography. For the first time a comparison of contact prints, i.e. the unprocessed photographic material, and the vintage prints will allow a new understanding of the artistic process. The contrasts will expound the scope of Rodchenko's intervention into pictorial solutions and demonstrate complete restructuring of specific works during the whole process. The exhibition will especially focus on illuminating the background of Eugenia Lemberg - the famous Girl with Leica - by presenting a rarely shown group of portraits and nudes.
