Pat York 'The Art World'

Pat York 'The Art World'

Zurich, Switzerland Sunday, June 11, 2006–Saturday, July 15, 2006

Pat York learnt the art of photography from the British star-photographer David Bailey, with whom she travelled as a traveleditor through the whole world. Her area of interest quickly broadended from architecture to travelling and portraits. Bailey’s influence and her strong interest in pictures that disclose the human feelings behind the facade, unveil Pat York’s unique honesty. Her portraits are being borne by her joie de vivre. With her directness in her artistic expression she achieves to show the artists in a state of total relaxation. Their personality reflects in their enviroment, either with people they dearly care for or in their studios. As we are looking at the insightful portraits we have to revise the image of the artists we once have created. Andy Warhol smiles, Damian Hirst chews on his jacket, David Hockney looks whimsically directly into the photographer’s lense and John Cage laughs out loud. It’s this kind of authenticity that surprises us and convinces us at the same time.

Pat York has just started working on 'The artworld' series and has had a chance to review some of her most happy and fulfilling photographic encounters. In Los Angeles, for example, David Hockney allowed her to capture him painting what have become iconic images of the city.

Pat York began working professionally when Pop Art was flourishing and there was a creative frenzy in the air that was exciting and palpable. Andy Warhol became a friend and she photographed him on different occasions. Since that decade Pat York has been able to portray other artists in their studios and homes. More recently things came full circle when her subject was the ebullient and brilliant James Rosenquisr, one of the founders of the Pop Art movement.
