sure shot

Exhibition duration: November 10, 2023 - January 13, 2024
Philipp Bollmann, curator collection Wemhöner will speak at the opening Sure shot is Secundino Hernández' fifth solo exhibition at Galerie Krinzinger.
He will be showing a new series of paintings in which Hernández takes up the physicality of earlier works. In an in-depth interview with critic, author and curator Joaquín Jesús Sánchez, the artist talks about pictorial invention, technique and material as well as the motivation to constantly explore new boundaries in his painting. “Perhaps these are works that are unexpected. I could have made them more refined, given them a more digital finish or used a more appealing idiom. But I wanted to get back to a more overt materiality because painting is nothing more than a physical entity that covers a surface. I worked with miniscule layers … microns of paint that dyes the canvas. Thereby the painting suddenly once again assumes the corporeality it has lost in recent years (…)” The full interview can be read in the exhibition catalog, Secundino Hernández, sure shot, published by Galerie Krinzinger 2023. (ISBN 9783903227057) or on our website: galerie-krinzinger.at Secundino Hernández exhibited at Galerie Krinzinger for the first time in 2007, when he was invited to Vienna as an artist in residence and presented his paintings in the rooms of Krinzinger Projekte . In contrast to the recent abstract works, the paintings at that time were strongly figurative, but not in the classical sense as portraits or reality-related human representations, but figurative abbreviations (...) Around 2010, the figurative-abstract hybrid system dissolved in favor of a more abstract calligraphic, gesturally free circulation and floating on the picture ground, in which drawing and painting were combined: graphic abbreviations, scribbles with patches of color and brushstrokes. They all resulted in a lively, dynamic flotation in the pictorial space. Sometimes figurative rudiments, comic-like remnants were deposited.Greasy, shiny black traces look as if they have been drawn with a felt-tip pen, they literally sit on the surface of the picture, while the finely drawn lines, spots of color and brushstrokes push into the pictorial space. The accumulation of numerous traces and complexes of forms resembles a cosmic explosion in galactic space; the painting is freed from gravity and no longer has a landscape horizon. An exception is a larger block of works from 2012/13, in which the artist has still drawn in strict horizontal strips of color and thus lent the paintings a landscape dimension. (...) The last groups of paintings belong to the Wash Paintings, a body of work that the artist began back in 2016. After the painting process, Hernández attacks the canvas with a high-pressure cleaner and washes its original painterly skin. What then remains, remains forever.
