Galerie Tanit Munich was founded in 1972 by Naila Kettaneh-Kunigk and Stefan Kunigk. The early program focused on showing artists from the minimal, conceptual and arte povera movements: Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Robert Mangold, Carl André, Robert Ryman, Brice Marden, John McCracken, Giovanni Anselmo, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Gerhard Merz, John M. Armleder, Olivier Mosset, Hamish Fulton and Urs Lüthi. Thomas Demand and Sylvie Fleury joined in the early stage of their careers. The roster of the gallery - that temporarily had additional spaces in Brussels and Cologne - was later extended to include Adrian Schiess, Martin Assig, Julia Mangold, and Catharina van Eetvelde. After 2002 the program of the gallery gradually shifted to a then younger generation of artists like Jeremy Blake and Charlotte Mumm. In 2007 Gallery Tanit Beyrouth was opened by Naila Kettaneh-Kunigk with the intention to participate in the cultural and artistic revival of Lebanon. Based in Beirut’s vibrant Mar Mikhael district, on the ground floor of the East Village building on Armenia Street, the gallery supports young Lebanese artists while maintaining a lively international program. Since its beginnings in Lebanon, it encouraged innovation with openness to the diversity of contemporary art, offering new experiences to the public. In the flourishing local art scene Tanit provides stimulating encounters with the visual arts to build cultural bridges and open meaningful discussions.
