Unveiling of monumental sculptures on the Trocadero From 5:30pm - 6:30pm

We are delighted to send you this save the date for a double exhibition of new works by Tom Sachs (Bronze Collection and Gold & Plywood), extending on all three floors of the gallery, and a unique installation of monumental sculptures at the Trocadero.

On Wednesday October 22nd from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, you are invited to join us to the unveiling of Tom Sachs’s monumental sculptures of the iconic figures – Hello Kitty, My Melody and Miffy – prominently displayed at the Trocadero, facing the Eiffel tower. Of the three sculptures shown, Hello Kitty and Miffy also function as outdoor fountains.

At the gallery, we will show a selection of bronze sculptures initially created for the Modernist tower, Lever House, in New York, as well as new works from this Bronze Collection. The first group of works represents the familiar Sanrio characters. Taking original toys as a model, Tom Sachs builds enlarged versions of his subjects with foamcore and thermal glue, which are then cast in bronze and painted white to resemble foamcore once again.

Another group of sculptures, make more formal references to Bauhaus and Minimalist sculpture. Two bronze-cast quarter pipes modeled on a skateboard ramp reflect Tom Sachs’s fascination with the transformation of common objects into works of art. Together with a bronze dumpster and bronze renderings of car battery towers made from well-known brands, they pay tribute to the work of Constantin Brancusi, Isamu Noguchi and Donald Judd.

In addition to these sculptures, we will present, Gold and Plywood, a new series of pyrographed plywood panels, carved and covered with gold leaf, adopting animalistic themes. Anthropomorphized animals, inspired by the illustrations of an antique edition of Goethe’s fable Reineke Fuchs, the characters in these works embody various aspects of human nature.

The opening at the gallery will take place on Thursday October 23rd from 7pm onwards.
