At the center of Galerie Thomas Schulte‘s presentation at Art Basel Miami Beach 2017 stands the encompassing installation of Each and Every One of You by Allan McCollum consisting of 1200 individual prints comprising the 600 most common female and 600 most common male names found in the U.S. This environmental work is accompanied by three new Richard Deacon sculptures specially made for Art Basel Miami Beach and works by gallery artists Angela de la Cruz, Julian Irlinger, Idris Khan, Michael Müller, Albrecht Schnider, and Pat Steir will be on display.
Each and Every One of You by Allan McCollum (born 1944, Los Angeles, USA) explores the creation of identity and the emotional involvement we are all invested in by giving each other names. Hoping to evoke an avalanche of memory and feeling with the simplest of means, McCollum researched the U.S. Census bureau’s 2000 compilation of the 600 most common female and 600 most common male names found in the U.S., and produced 1200 prints, each one identically executed and framed. At the booth at Art Basel Miami Beach, the names are hung in a dense grid. Bringing into play concepts of individuality and mass – a gesture typical for McCollum’s oeuvre – the artist presents the beholder with their own memories and emotions associated with individual names while at the same time revealing these names as a mass phenomenon.
