Seven Times by Idris Khan is a sculptural installation that  consists of 144 sandblasted steel cubes arranged in a grid, 49 of which  are displayed in the Corner Space of Galerie Thomas Schulte. In his  installation the artist uses the principles of minimal art to combine  them with an aesthetic symbolism borrowed from the Islamic religion in  order to investigate opposing notions of repetition. While minimalism  sees repetition as a performative process of neutralization and  abstraction, in Seven Times this concept is juxtaposed by repetition as ritual, which in the context of religion creates identity and meaning.
