As part of Frankfurt’s Gallery Weekend 2020, GALERIE WILMA TOLKSDORF is presenting in the exhibition FLuORESCENCE the new work series Flowers by the artist AXEL HÜTTE. The artworks are the result of a long-standing experimental, photographic process and the intensive, artistic exploration of the pictorial tradition of the flower still life.

Titled FLuORESCENCE, derived from the terms florescence - blossom and fluorescence, the exhibition shows Axel Hütte’s new works, which seem to glow from an inner light source.  The artist arranges the delicate, dried blossom branches and photographs them against a white background with special consideration of the incident daylight. In the subsequent image processing Axel Hütte condenses the motifs into surreal formations.

The shadows cast by the flowers unfold in a process of colour reversal into a dynamic, quasi ghostly echo. In the finely balanced interplay between the two-dimensional and the spatial, the organic structures shown in a large format become a sculptural counterpart.

Executed as Ditone-prints on uncoated paper, the large-format photographs acquire an intense, radiant coloration. At the same time, the elaborate production process enables the reproduction of the sensual, matt black background. The small-format works in the series are printed on metal, which gives the motifs an additional shimmering effect.

Axel Hütte (*1951 in Essen) is one of the most internationally renowned artists working in the medium of photography. Works by Axel Hütte are represented in the most important national and international collections and are published in numerous monographs. Extensive solo exhibitions have recently been shown at the Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, the Josef-Albers-Museum Quadrat, Bottrop, the Museum Franz Gertsch, Burgdorf and the Kunsthalle Krems, among others.
