Biography

Timeline

1927
Takes his first art classes, from the sculptor Onorio Ruotolo, director of a private art school.
1930
Attends classes at the Cooper Union.
1931 - 1934
Does occasional illustrations and covers for newspapers and periodicals.
1931
Establishes his own studio, in Greenwich Village.
1935 - 1938
Joins WPA (Works Progress Administration), first as a teacher and then creating paintings for the Federal Art Project, Easel and Mural Divisions.
1949
Participates in the founding of the Artists’ Club. Active in the organization of the Ninth Street Show.
1953
Organizes the Second Annual Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture (successor to the original Ninth Street Show) at the Stable Gallery.
1954 - 1955
Visiting critic, Yale University, New Haven, CT
1954
Receives the Logan Medal, First Prize, The Art Institute of Chicago, for his picture, Seated Figure, 1953–54, which is acquired by the museum.
1958
Visiting Professor, University of California, Berkeley, CA.
