Walasse Ting (Shanghai, 13 october  1928 – New York, 17 May 2010) was a Chinese-American painter. He leaves China in 1946, then briefly lives in Hongkong en settles in Paris in 1953. There he becomes friends with Karel Appel, Asgar Jorn and Pierre Alechinsky. In 1957 he moves to New York, where he is influenced by pop art and abstract expressionism.

From 1989 he alternately lives in New York and Amsterdam, where he shares the atelier with Karel Appel. In 2002 he unfortunetaly falls into a coma after a cerebral hemorrhage. His remaining years he lives in a nursing home in Amstelveen. Ting dies in New York at the age of 81.

The exhibition focuses on the years when Ting lives and works in Amsterdam. His works from this period are characterised by bright tropical colours with Chinese symbolism, like lotus flowers and patterns. Never before have his works from this period been shown in a museum at such a grand scale. Some 80 original works by Ting from several private collections are shown.

The exhibition is completed with postcards and photographs that have never before been available to the public. A unique view into the extraordinary and flamboyant life of this colourful artist.
