Instant Landscapes: Kim Nam-Pyo

Gana Art Gallery 97 Pyungchang-dong Seoul, South Korea Thursday, November 19, 2009–Saturday, December 19, 2009

Opening Reception: November 19, 2009: 6-8 P.M.

Gana Art New York presents an exhibition by Korean artist Nam-Pyo Kim. On view from November 19 - December 19, the show will be comprised of a selection of mixed media works on canvas. This will be the artist's first U.S. solo show.Created with green, bright red and blue colors contrasted by black charcoal lines on white gesso backgrounds, Kim's paintings appear to be super-natural still life depictions of animals, wildlife and various bodies of water intertwined with man-made consumer apparel such as shoes and bags. Deeply influenced by the art of traditional Korean ink painting, Kim pays homage by applying washes of black paint in a calligraphic, gestured manner yet adds a fresh approach by introducing bright bursts of color and applying fake black fur onto the canvas.

All titled "Instant Landscape" Kim's work reveals a unique fusion of traditional Korean ink painting with his own organic and fantastical forms. Much like the meditative works of traditional Eastern ink painters and Western Modern art movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Kim's "instant" works are fluid expressions that are intuitive and not based on preconceived forms or ideas. As Kim puts it, "I like instant and spontaneous methods that lead from one to another, turning my paintings into logical results."

Kim Nampyo was born in 1970 and lives and works in Seoul. He received both his B.A. and M.A. in Painting from Seoul National University. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions in Korea and most recently at Canvas International Art in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
