Gana Art Gallery is hosting the solo exhibition of Joel Shapiro, the eminent artist of the contemporary sculpture.

Born in 1941 in New York, Joel Shapiro received his bachelor's and master's degrees in New York University. Since his first solo exhibition in 1970, the artist had over 100 solo exhibitions and retrospectives in world renowned museums and art galleries such as MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Musee d'Orsay. His works are now part of the permanent collections of the most prestigious museums - the Centre Pompidou, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Tate Gallery, and many more.

Shapiro delves into the relationship of abstraction and figuration through his simple aesthetic vocabulary of rectangles. With geometric forms, the artist creates sculptures showing lush expressiveness of human movement. The works give the viewer a new visual evocation with their vivid movement soaring into the air, and artistic tension.

This exhibition shows small bronze sculptures, grandiose works of a few meters, and drawings, touring from Gana Art Center in Pyeongchang-dong to Gana Art Busan in Busan. By conversing through familiar and comprehensible artistic language, Shapiro will bring the world of sculpture one step closer to the viewing audiences.
