"A Slow Time in Arcadia"
Roy DeForest and William T. Wiley: Paintings, Drawings, and Constructions, 1960-2002

July 8 – August 23, 2002

During July and August, George Adams Gallery will present a survey of paintings, drawings, and constructions by Roy DeForest and William T. Wiley two prst forty years. The exhibition, which presents an overview of the artists’ careers to date, will include paintings, drawings and constructions by both artists ranging in date from 1960 up to the present.

The earliest work in the show is an abstract painting by Wiley from 1959. Entitled, "Flag Song," the painting provides a bridge between the predominant abstract expressionist style of the time and the funk aesthetic to follow. Two of Wiley's constructions from the 1970s are also included in the show. Incorporating found objects such as wire, wood, and cardboard in combination with narrative drawing and painting, Hilton Kramer subsequently labeled Wiley's assemblages "Dude Ranch Dada." In the piece Hard Lesson for the Dunce (1977), a tree stump and a spindly branch frame a brushy watercolor of a dunce-capped log. In addition, there will be several watercolors from the 1970s and two paintings, Modern Limits (1974) and I Visit Bob (1981) on display.

Representing DeForest will be three multi-narrative paintings A Bird in the Hand (1965), A Slow Time in Arcadia (1977) and Who Knows Man or Beast (1979), exhibiting the artist's characteristic juxtaposition of pattern, texture, and oversaturated color. A Slow Time in Arcadia depicts a densely filled scene of frolicking wolf-dogs in a mountainous terrain whereby reds, oranges, blues, and pinks collide in heavily impastoed surfaces. Several drawings with hand-made frames and two relief constructions from 2002 made of carved forms mounted on wood frames will also be on view.

The exhibition will continue through August 23. The gallery’s summer hours are Monday through Friday, from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. Images from the exhibition are posted on the gallery’s website at www.artnet.com/gadams.html
