We are pleased to announce an exhibition of select collages and paintings by Northwest Master, Paul Horiuchi. Made up of works from the 1960s and 1980s, this exhibition represents a diverse collection from the artist’s career. Two large works have a pattern of “scattered fans” a common theme in traditional Japanese screens. Some of the collages reference figures flying or falling through space, while another depicts a quiet seashore landscape. "People constantly tell me my paintings have a very peaceful quality. To me, peace and serenity are needed to balance the sensationalism that surrounds us." – Paul Horiuchi The artist was born Chikamasa Horiuchi on April 12, 1906 in Oishi, Japan. He immigrated to the United States when he was fourteen, eventually moving to Seattle, WA in 1946. There he focused on collage and became a successful artist associated with the Northwest School. Horiuchi has had several solo exhibitions at museums in the United States and Japan and his work is included in many private and public collections, including the mosaic mural that serves as the backdrop of the Seattle Center Mural Amphitheater. The artist died in 1999.
