Biography

Timeline

Edwin Boddington, son of Henry Boddington, comes from the illustrious Williams family of landscape painters. He was a pupil of his father and became a competent painter in his own right. Edwin was strongly influenced by his father and he often painted similar compositions. Edwin even finished some of his father’s canvases after his death.
Despite his father's influence, Edwin Boddington developed a very personal and recognizable style. He usually painted his river scenes in very dark shades of green and brown, such as in this tranquil depiction of a lone fisherman.
He exhibited throughout England, most notably 11 times at the famed Royal Academy, 45 times at Suffolk Street, and 25 times at the British Institution. These were probably three of the four best galleries in Great Britain in his lifetime.
