Herbert William Weekes was a well known British animal and genre painter. He was the younger brother of Henry Weekes Jnr and the son of the sculptor Henry Weekes RA. For most of his life he lived and worked in London and exhibited from 1865 at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, the Grosvenor Gallery and at Suffolk Street.
Humorous animal paintings were Herbert William Weekes’s favourite subjects. His amusing portrayals of animals scenes were bordering on the human.
This is an exceptional example of painting is closely related to that of the Dutch Romantics, Krusemann, Dommersen of a very popular subject painted by an equally popular artist.
His paintings are very much sought after and still appreciated today.
