Timeline

Louis H. Grimshaw was the son of John Atkinson Grimshaw
Louis painted moonlight town views in a similar style to that of his father. He collaborated with his father on many pictures, John would paint the sky and backgrounds, and Louis painted the figures
About 1902 Grimshaw painted a series of views of London, as it was decorated for the Coronation of King Edward VII. Interestingly, St. Margaret’s is a portrayal of crowds drifting down towards the North Façade window to view the colourful electric lights that are suspended in front of the Church. As electric lighting was a new phenomenon that has clearly caught the crowd’s attention, it may well be the case that this oil on panel is one such example of this Coronation series of 1902
