Biography

Timeline

Studied at the board of Manufacturers School of Art in Edinburgh, and he first began to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1880. His work shows the influence of some of the 19th Century Dutch painters such as Isaac Israels, which became even more evident after he made a sketching trip to Holland. However, Hutchinson remained a Scottish painter to the core who never lived elsewhere than in his city of his birth. He supplied the illustrations for a book, Reminiscences of Old Scots Folk written by T.R. Barnett and published in 1913.
