From 1st February – 6th March, Hidden Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in the centre of Brighton, will be hosting a selling exhibition spotlighting their rare collection of original exhibition posters, designed by the most iconic artists of the last century. These stunning posters are of particular value: not only are they superb pieces of art in their own right, they are also rare historical mementos.

“Many of the leading 20th century artists lent their mastery to the creation of their own exhibition posters”, says Poppy Boys-Stones, Director of Operations at Hidden. “By their very nature, these posters are ephemeral; originally designed to advertise galleries and exhibitions, these posters were not intended to be kept forever. Nevertheless, the meticulous craftsmanship and skill invested in their creation meant that exhibition posters were soon recognised as artworks in their own right. Today, they are celebrated for their profound aesthetic and cultural significance, serving as poignant snapshots of history.”

The exhibition will feature posters from across the world and dating as far back as 1945, including pieces from Picasso, Matisse, Warhol, and Banksy. Posters that have survived in such excellent condition are incredibly rare and growing more scarce as time goes on, providing a unique insight into not only the artist’s technical skill, but also their commercial identity.

On display at the gallery located in the heart of Brighton’s iconic North Laine, this exhibition is set against a backdrop of creativity and innovation in one of Britain’s cultural epicentres.

“We have always been huge fans of original exhibition posters”, says Boys-Stones. “We’re sure our visitors will love these exceptional pieces and their stories as much as we do!”

Alongside the exhibition, Hidden will also be displaying pieces from its broader collection of signed works by artists such as Joan Miró, Peter Blaker, Invader, and more.

Hidden Gallery in Brighton is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 10am – 5pm, and Sunday from 11 - 4pm.
