Born in Oshkosh, WI.
1900
Enrolled at the University of Chicago.
1901
Moved to New York City and accepted a position as an assistant teacher at the Ethical Culture School in New York.

Began attending School of Education at New York University.
1905
Received his degree from New York University.
1907
Photographed tenement homes for the National Child Labor Committee in New York City.
1917
Accepted a position with the American Red Cross and photographed refugees and displaced civilians in war torn Europe.
1920
Returned to New York City and was assigned to the American Red Cross National Headquarters.
1924
Art Directors Club of New York awarded him a medal at the Exhibition of Advertising Arts.
1932
Published Book, Men at Work.
1936 - 1937
Appointed head photographer for the National Research Project of the Works Progress Administration.
